Junior Battery Scientist

San Leandro, CA
Full Time
Entry Level
Position: Jr Battery Scientist (Electrolyte)
Reports To: Director of Battery Technology

Coreshell's metallurgical Silicon anode technology delivers high capacity, fast-charging, and superior safety. Our low-cost liquid-phase nano-coating addresses critical electrode-surface degradation issues and enables batteries with a Silicon-dominant anode that have higher energy density, superior intrinsic thermal safety, and significantly lower cost/kWh compared to current LIBs. Our Si anode material is 50% the cost of graphite and 100% domestically sourced. We strive to transform the global automotive market by enabling low-cost and long-range EVs as a first step towards net-zero sustainability in the near future.

Core Responsibilities: Coreshell is looking for a Junior Battery Scientist with a strong background in battery materials, specifically focusing on developing and optimizing electrolyte formulation.

  • Collaborate closely within Coreshell’s Cell Development Team to improve cell energy density and cycle life through optimization of electrolyte formulation and the anode-electrolyte interface
  • Cell and component fabrication: optimize cell manufacturing processes including slurry mixing, electrode fabrication, and final cell assembly using novel materials
  • Cell testing: Evaluate device level performance under various operating / environmental conditions. Interpret data to recommend changes in cell design to meet performance targets
  • Post-test analysis: Identify failure modes of the cathode and collaborate with Senior Battery Scientists on how to mitigate failure modes
  • Partner with manufacturing team to scale electrolyte materials for prototyping and pilot production

Required experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry
  • Strong background in electrochemistry and mechanistic organic chemistry, in particular as it relates to formation and stability of the SEI
  • Experience in design and fabrication of lithium-ion battery cells, from basic materials and components selection through cell parameter specification to meet application performance targets
  • Root cause failure analysis in state-of-the-art and next-generation lithium-ion batteries
  • Strong materials-level knowledge of Li-ion battery components and knowledge of electrochemical characterization techniques such as EIS, CV, GITT, etc.
  • The ideal candidate will have significant experience in using a computational framework for lifetime prediction and interpreting full cell voltage curves
  • Knowledge of industrial standards for battery materials, processing, and testing protocols
  • Substantial experience characterizing materials using standard techniques such as NMR, GCMS, BET, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR, Raman, etc.
  • Creative, self-driven, “out-of-the-box” thinker with a history of problem solving and an ability to wear many hats. The ideal candidate will have a track record of meeting timely technical milestones as well as achieving commercially-relevant product performance targets

Location & Benefits: San Leandro, CA. Full-time. $95,000-115,000. Salary and equity options depend on experience. Dental, vision, healthcare and 401(k) benefits are included. Applications will be screened as received.
